What is a Volute Centrifugal Pump?

2026-05-11 0 Leave me a message

A volute centrifugal pump is a type of dynamic pump that converts mechanical energy into hydraulic energy through the rotation of an impeller and relies on a spiral volute casing for efficient fluid delivery. Unlike other types of centrifugal pumps, its most prominent feature is the volute-shaped casing (also known as a spiral casing), which is the core component distinguishing it from models such as diffuser centrifugal pumps. Volute centrifugal pumps feature robust construction, relatively low cost, quiet operation, and reliable performance, with minimal impact from corrosion and erosion. They are the preferred equipment for most industrial and civil fluid delivery applications.

What is a Volute Centrifugal Pump

I. Core Structure

The stable operation of the pump depends on the coordination of various components. The core components and their functions are as follows:

1.Volute Casing

A spiral chamber surrounding the impeller with a cross-sectional area that gradually increases from the impeller outlet to the discharge port. Its core functions are to collect high-speed fluid, reduce velocity and increase pressure. Its shape and size directly affect the pump's efficiency and pressure. It is divided into single volute (most widely used) and double volute (balances radial force and extends service life).

2.Impeller

The "heart" of the pump, a rotating component with curved blades, connected to the motor via a pump shaft. It rotates at high speed to generate centrifugal force, sucking in fluid and imparting kinetic energy. Blade parameters (shape, quantity, angle) determine the pump's flow rate, head and efficiency.

3.Pump Shaft and Bearings

The pump shaft transmits mechanical energy from the motor to the impeller. Bearings support the rotation of the pump shaft, maintain coaxiality and reduce friction. For high-temperature and high-pressure working conditions, oil coolers are required to prevent oil deterioration and extend bearing life.

4.Sealing Mechanism

Prevents fluid leakage and ingress of external air to avoid cavitation. Common types include mechanical seals and packing seals. Matching with auxiliary sealing systems can improve reliability, and maintenance can refer to API 682 standards.

5.Suction Port and Discharge Port

The suction port is located at the center of the volute to draw in fluid; the discharge port is at the end of the volute to deliver pressurized fluid. The size and shape of both affect fluid resistance and pump efficiency.

II. Working Principle

The working process is continuous energy conversion, divided into 4 core stages:

1.Fluid Suction

The motor drives the impeller to rotate at high speed, forming a low-pressure area at the center of the impeller. Fluid is sucked into the pump under the pressure difference.

2.Kinetic Energy Implantation

As the impeller rotates continuously, the blades push the fluid to move radially, significantly increasing the fluid's flow velocity and kinetic energy.

3.Energy Conversion

High-speed fluid enters the volute casing, where the enlarged flow passage reduces the flow velocity, converting kinetic energy into pressure energy to achieve high-pressure delivery.

4.Fluid Discharge

Pressurized fluid is discharged through the discharge port. With the continuous rotation of the impeller, continuous delivery is completed.

III. Core Advantages

1.High Operating Efficiency

The volute structure matches fluid flow characteristics, reducing turbulence loss. The efficiency under design conditions reaches 70%–90%, with uniform flow velocity distribution.

2.Simple Structure and High Reliability

Fewer core components, easy to process and install, no complex transmission mechanism, low failure rate, no need for inlet and outlet check valves, and low maintenance cost.

3.Strong Versatility and Wide Application

Can be designed in different specifications according to working conditions, suitable for various fluids such as clean water, sewage and chemical media, and adaptable to normal temperature, high temperature and high pressure working conditions.

4.Compact Design and Space Saving

Integrated design, small size and light weight, suitable for limited space scenarios, and easy to integrate into existing delivery systems.

5.High Cost Performance and Low Operating Cost

Low manufacturing cost, convenient replacement of wearing parts, energy saving through efficient operation, suitable for large-flow delivery scenarios.

Summary

Volute centrifugal pumps are a reliable choice for industrial fluid delivery thanks to their hydrodynamic advantages. However, their actual energy efficiency is affected by details such as material selection and manufacturing.
